Three Rivers School
6/01/21 - OTTER NEWS UPDATE
Happy June, Otter Families!
Here are a few things you Otter know during these last couple weeks of school!
FLIPFLOP - Please note that the final week of school we will flipflop Wednesday's and Thursday's schedule.
iPADS - Once again students continuing with Bend-La Pine Schools will be allowed to keep their loaner iPads with them throughout the summer months. This will provide students with a device to continue learning opportunities over the summer.
If you will not be attending a Bend-La Pine Schools program or school next year, please return your iPad, charging brick and cord to the office by the last day of school, June 17th. If you will be attending a different Bend-La Pine Schools program or school next year, keep the iPad you have and take it with you to your new site in September.
Sometimes plans change during the summer. If you find yourself moving out of the area or leaving the district during the summer and need to return your iPad, please drop it off Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Education Center located at 520 Wall Street in Bend. Please remember to also return your charging brick and cord at that time. The fee for a missing cord is $5 and a missing charging brick is $20. If you have any questions, contact the district office at 541-355-1000.
HOTSPOT RETURNS - All students who have a district-issued hotspot at their home are asked to return the hotspot and charging equipment to the school's front office by the last day of school, June 17th. Service to all hotspots will end on June 18th. Any hotspot that has not been returned to school will cease to function beyond this date.
YEARBOOK DISTRIBUTION- For those of you who purchased a yearbook for your child, they will receive it on their final day of school, Thursday, June 17th.
PTA DONATION OPPORTUNITY - The PTA is now registered with the Oregon Bottle Drop. Donating to the PTA is now as easy as drinking a soda! Stop by the Three Rivers School front office, grab a blue bag and sticker, fill it up with OR deposit plastic/aluminum/glass containers, and then drop the bag off at any Bottle Drop location. Feel free to grab some extra bags/stickers for family and friends, too! Have a business or office that could collect all summer? Let us know at [email protected] and we'd be happy to drop off a stack of blue bags.
USED BOOK SALE - This week is our school library's Used Book Sale. Remember to send your students with some quarters to purchase cleaned, gently used donated books or old library books. Their classes will 'shop' during their regular library times throughout this week.
SUNRIVER LIBRARY INFO - Check out the Deschutes Public Library for all of its resources including their Summer with the Library program! Click here for details.

TEACHER REQUESTS FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR – We are unable to accept requests for teachers for the next academic year. This includes asking for “a friend” to be in the same class as your child. Being a small school with only two teachers per grade level, our first priority is to balance the social, academic, and behavioral needs of all students to ensure that classes are diverse. Thank you for your understanding and trusting the processes we have in place for creating well balanced classrooms.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL OPEN GYM - Open Gym is available to all middle school girls - no need to sign-up! If your 6th-8th grade girl is interested in brushing up on their skills or just giving basketball a try, please encourage them to join Miss McKinney in the gym on Tuesday's and Friday's from 3:15 to 4:30. Covid protocol will be followed. (Please note, there is no open gym on Friday, April 16th as it is a no school day.)

A reminder that the District has canceled the formal Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences that normally take place at the end of October. In our Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) model, staff are making frequent informal contacts with families. We believe continuing CDL on October 28th, 29th, and 30th will be the most valuable use of those days.
COSTUME DRIVE BY AND CURBSIDE BOUTIQUE
The thought of not seeing our students dressed up this Halloween had us feeling down. So, we decided to do something about it. On Friday, October 30thwe are inviting kids and adults to make their way down to Three Rivers during Grab and Go meal time in full costume. We will have a piece of candy for the kids, Jack-o-Lantern cookies in the lunch, and a Curbside Boutique. LET'S GO OTTERS!
9/29/2020 - DELAY IN RETURN TO HYBRID
As you know, we had expected to begin in-person instruction for our K-3 students at Three Rivers School on October 5th. Unfortunately, because of a recent increase in Covid-19 numbers within Deschutes County, combined with metrics set by Governor Brown and the Oregon Health Authority, we must postpone these plans.
Our district will be monitoring the situation weekly. The earliest we could return to in-person would be late October, but only if the health metrics improve. You can find more information on the district's Return to School webpage. In the meantime, teachers and students will continue with comprehensive distance learning and remain on the same schedule we are currently using.
Principal - Three Rivers K-8 School
9/16/2020 - REPORTING AN ABSENCE
Until further notice, please report an absence only if your student will not be engaged or participating in any of the student's remote learning on a particular day. Please use this email address to report your student absences: [email protected]
You can also find the attendance email address on our Three Rivers website: https://www.bend.k12.or.us/threerivers/our-school/contact-us
Automated absence calls and emails will begin on Monday (9/21) -- these messages will be generated and sent out automatically at 11:00 a.m. daily to parents of students who show an unexcused absence from the previous day.
9/14/2020 - FIRST DAY HELP
We've heard from several of you this morning with a variety of issues and concerns. Here are a few tips and reminders that may help.
Students with an iPad from last spring need to follow these steps to get their iPad ready for the first day of school:
1) Open your iPad and turn it on. Charge if necessary.
2) Check your settings for available updates. Do any available updates. (Allow time for this. It can average 10-30 minutes to complete updates.)
3) Check your Wi-Fi connection. Does your VPN work? If not, go to Self Service and re-install Global Protect. After you install it, re-start your iPad and check the connection.
4) If you forgot your password, or still need tech assistance, please call 541-355-8700. Make sure to leave a message with a clear name and contact information.
Email is best (format is [email protected]). If you are calling their classroom phones, please be sure to leave a message so they can return your call at their earliest convenience.
Unfortunately, we are experiencing many troubles with WebEx this morning. The District is working on the problems and we hope to have it running smoothly soon. There is no fix at the moment - we'll let you know once things are running again.
Middle School Questions About Canvas:
Use StudentVue to see your class list. Join your class Webex sessions - middle school teachers will be focusing on helping all middle school students learn about navigating in Canvas.
We have placed an order for additional hotspots. If you need a hotspot, please call the school office so we can get you on the list.
Initial Network Password:
If you do not recall your student's initial network password, contact your student's teacher or call the office at 541.355.3000.
9/11/2020 - BE READY FOR MONDY - FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Here are some friendly reminders for this last weekend before school starts.
First on the list is our message that we are here for our students and families – this next week will not be a hard start. It will be a soft start to get everyone settled in, answer questions, build confidence and make sure pieces are in place to move forward successfully.
Here are a few other items to be thinking about:
9/2/2020 - WELCOME TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES
We are excited to get the 2020-2021 school year underway! We know it will be challenging, but it is our hope that we are moving in the direction of a hybrid model for at least some of our students in the near future.
That said, you should have received an email from the school district with sample schedules for the elementary and middle levels. Being a K-8 school with some teachers we share across all grade levels, we needed to make a couple of minor adjustments. Middle School parents should have received an email from Three Rivers on Monday detailing what the day looks like for our 6th-8th grade students. Parents of K-5 students can expect to hear from your child’s teacher next week with a detailed daily schedule.
Here are some other important details for our families:
Every student in the school will have an iPad this year. The District has placed the order for iPads for our K-2 students but we do not expect those to arrive by the start of school. We will be in touch as soon as they arrive and will work to get them to you promptly. Third grade teachers are currently getting their student iPads ready and will be reaching out to their families regarding distribution. For all 4th through 8th grade students who are new to this school district, we hope to have your iPads ready next week and will contact you directly to coordinate getting them to you. All other returning Three Rivers students should have their iPads from last year and be ready to go. Be sure to contact us if this is not the case!
We highly recommend purchasing iPad insurance. Inevitably, things happen and the cost to repair a cracked screen or replace a machine is expensive. Insurance provides some peace of mind since your child will be handling it daily. The insurance is $30 for the year and can be purchased online. Learn more HERE. If you have any difficulties with the online purchasing process, just give us a call in the office. 541.355.3000
Class Lists and Middle School Schedules
Class lists for grades 1 through 5 will be posted on the school doors Friday, September 4th at 4:00 pm. At the same time, middle school schedules will be able to be viewed on both Student and Parent Vue. Kindergarten parents will receive an email on Tuesday 9/8 letting you know your child’s teacher.
Meet Your Teacher Events - Mark Your Calendars
As we make our best efforts to keep students and staff safe, we’ve decided to have a drive-thru “Meet Your Teacher Event” in the pick-up / drop-off lane in front of the school. All families will need to remain in their cars when they pull up to the appropriate staff member, and we ask that you wear a mask once you roll down your windows. Our schedule is below. If showing up at the time allotted for your family does not work, we welcome you to come during the other hour of the Meet Your Teacher Event.
Welcoming New Staff
Family Access Network (FAN) Advocate
Jenn Reuter, our FAN Advocate, is out on family leave. She will be returning in the not too distant future, but in the meantime please contact Mara Stephens for any needs you may be having. Mara can be reached at [email protected], by phone at 541.355.1037, or by text at 541.246.7409.
This week, we received the very good news that the summer meals program is being extended through December 2020. Once we hear the details on how this will work, we will be sure to share that information with you.
Free and Reduced Meals
Even though students will not be in the building as we begin the school year and even though the meals program has been extended, we encourage all families to take a moment to fill out a Free & Reduced Meal application for the 2020-21 school year. Part of the Oregon Student Success Act includes expanded income guidelines for qualifying for free meals. APPLY HERE or stop by the office for a paper copy. You can save $725-$800 per child a year if you qualify for free or reduced priced meals, which includes breakfast and lunch. All grade levels are included. Please see the Oregon Expanded Income Guideline Chart
Each year, our District office mails out a Family Handbook to all of our families. That publication has been delayed due to the need to update it with current information. Families can expect to receive their Handbook some time during the month of September.
School Office Hours
We are currently open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Labor Day). Once school starts, office hours are M-F, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Stop by and see us or give us a call if you need a hand with anything or have questions. Masks and social distancing are required in the school lobby.
Keeping in Touch
We do our best to share information in a variety of ways. We truly hope you will keep an eye on all of these sources so that you are up to speed with our latest information.
We’re seeing orders being loaded to our online store! Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a Three Rivers clothing item – adult and youth sizes. The store closes a week from today on September 16th. You can, of course, wear your Otter Wear any time you like, but we’ll be encouraging everyone to continue our tradition of Otter Wear Fridays – any Three Rivers clothing item or just school colors: red, yellow and black. ORDER HERE. Let’s Go Otters!
We are ready to get this school year started. Despite all of the unknowns, we are approaching it ready to do our very best to serve the Three Rivers students, families and community!

OTTER NEWS 2020.08.21
Now that our office and admin staff are settling back in, we’ll be emailing our usual Otter News updates a few times a month to help keep our families informed on what we know. We’ll also be posting these same updates on the website under the picture of Webster the Otter. If you miss an email, check Webster for the latest news. We know there is nothing normal about the start of this school year, and we miss you all very much!
If you will be a new Otter at Three Rivers this year, you are probably already working with our Registrar, Jill James. If not, please be sure to contact her ASAP so we can be sure your child is ready to go for the first day of school on September 14th. She can be reached at 541.355.3003 or at [email protected].
On hold for now. If we get the OK to begin bringing students into the building, we will post our supply list on the website and share it by email. Teachers may reach out to you as we get the year underway if they have particular items they’d like you to have.
Free & Reduced
Please take a moment to complete an online application. The income guidelines have changed dramatically and we hope many more families will benefit: https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp
We may not be able to all be together yet, but we still have lots of Otter spirit! Our fall Otter Wear online store is now OPEN! It will stay open through September 16th and we’ll receive items here at school on October 9th. We’ll probably have a drive by session to get items out to families. Go online and take a look – youth and adult sizes, shirts, sweatshirts, trucker hats and more. The link is below and it’s also posted on our website. LET’S GO OTTERS! ONLINE OTTER WEAR STORE
