Dear Families,

As you know, we had expected to begin in-person instruction for our K-3 students at Three Rivers School on October 5th. Unfortunately, because of a recent increase in Covid-19 numbers within Deschutes County, combined with metrics set by Governor Brown and the Oregon Health Authority, we must postpone these plans.

Our district will be monitoring the situation weekly. The earliest we could return to in-person would be late October, but only if the health metrics improve. You can find more information on the district's Return to School webpage. In the meantime, teachers and students will continue with comprehensive distance learning and remain on the same schedule we are currently using.

Tim Broadbent
Principal - Three Rivers K-8 School

Until further notice, please report an absence only if your student will not be engaged or participating in any of the student's remote learning on a particular day. Please use this email address to report your student absences: [email protected]

You can also find the attendance email address on our Three Rivers website:

Automated absence calls and emails will begin on Monday (9/21) -- these messages will be generated and sent out automatically at 11:00 a.m. daily to parents of students who show an unexcused absence from the previous day.

9/14/2020 - FIRST DAY HELP

We've heard from several of you this morning with a variety of issues and concerns. Here are a few tips and reminders that may help.

Students with an iPad from last spring need to follow these steps to get their iPad ready for the first day of school:
1) Open your iPad and turn it on. Charge if necessary.
2) Check your settings for available updates. Do any available updates. (Allow time for this. It can average 10-30 minutes to complete updates.)
3) Check your Wi-Fi connection. Does your VPN work? If not, go to Self Service and re-install Global Protect. After you install it, re-start your iPad and check the connection.
4) If you forgot your password, or still need tech assistance, please call 541-355-8700. Make sure to leave a message with a clear name and contact information.

Contacting Teachers:
Email is best (format is firstnam[email protected]). If you are calling their classroom phones, please be sure to leave a message so they can return your call at their earliest convenience.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing many troubles with WebEx this morning. The District is working on the problems and we hope to have it running smoothly soon. There is no fix at the moment - we'll let you know once things are running again.

Middle School Questions About Canvas:
Use StudentVue to see your class list. Join your class Webex sessions - middle school teachers will be focusing on helping all middle school students learn about navigating in Canvas.

We have placed an order for additional hotspots. If you need a hotspot, please call the school office so we can get you on the list.

Initial Network Password:
If you do not recall your student's initial network password, contact your student's teacher or call the office at 541.355.3000.

Here are some friendly reminders for this last weekend before school starts.

First on the list is our message that we are here for our students and families – this next week will not be a hard start. It will be a soft start to get everyone settled in, answer questions, build confidence and make sure pieces are in place to move forward successfully.

Here are a few other items to be thinking about:

  • Get your student work space ready
  • Charge those iPads
  • Take another look at your schedule (sent from K-5 teachers or viewable on ParentVue and StudentVue for students in grades 6-8)
  • Keep the Technology Help Line handy for questions about iPads, etc. - 541.355.8700. You might try some of these things first.
  • Purchase iPad Insurance - $30 for the year. It’s a smart investment – repairs run $150 and full replacement costs $299. Purchase online or call Beth in the office (541-355-3001).
  • Purchase Otter Wear – our online store closes at midnight on 9/16. You won’t have another chance til spring time.
  • Plan to swing by school next week and get your Grab and Go Meals – free to all children ages 0 to 18. Monday through Friday here at Three Rivers.
  • Are you ready to go with WebEx? It’s needed for your meetings with teachers! Learn more about WebEx and how to download it onto a student issued iPad. WebEx meetings, small groups and one-on-one sessions are hosted within teacher’s WebEx rooms. Use the links teachers send out or, to find a teacher’s room, go to:
  • If you’re a middle school student, remember to check in your Advisory teacher if you have general questions and need a hand.
  • Get some good rest and be ready to see your teachers on Monday morning.

Otter Families,

We are excited to get the 2020-2021 school year underway! We know it will be challenging, but it is our hope that we are moving in the direction of a hybrid model for at least some of our students in the near future.

That said, you should have received an email from the school district with sample schedules for the elementary and middle levels. Being a K-8 school with some teachers we share across all grade levels, we needed to make a couple of minor adjustments. Middle School parents should have received an email from Three Rivers on Monday detailing what the day looks like for our 6th-8th grade students. Parents of K-5 students can expect to hear from your child’s teacher next week with a detailed daily schedule.

Here are some other important details for our families:

Every student in the school will have an iPad this year. The District has placed the order for iPads for our K-2 students but we do not expect those to arrive by the start of school. We will be in touch as soon as they arrive and will work to get them to you promptly. Third grade teachers are currently getting their student iPads ready and will be reaching out to their families regarding distribution. For all 4th through 8th grade students who are new to this school district, we hope to have your iPads ready next week and will contact you directly to coordinate getting them to you. All other returning Three Rivers students should have their iPads from last year and be ready to go. Be sure to contact us if this is not the case!

iPad Insurance
We highly recommend purchasing iPad insurance. Inevitably, things happen and the cost to repair a cracked screen or replace a machine is expensive. Insurance provides some peace of mind since your child will be handling it daily. The insurance is $30 for the year and can be purchased online. Learn more HERE. If you have any difficulties with the online purchasing process, just give us a call in the office. 541.355.3000

Class Lists and Middle School Schedules
Class lists for grades 1 through 5 will be posted on the school doors Friday, September 4th at 4:00 pm. At the same time, middle school schedules will be able to be viewed on both Student and Parent Vue. Kindergarten parents will receive an email on Tuesday 9/8 letting you know your child’s teacher.

Meet Your Teacher Events - Mark Your Calendars
As we make our best efforts to keep students and staff safe, we’ve decided to have a drive-thru “Meet Your Teacher Event” in the pick-up / drop-off lane in front of the school. All families will need to remain in their cars when they pull up to the appropriate staff member, and we ask that you wear a mask once you roll down your windows. Our schedule is below. If showing up at the time allotted for your family does not work, we welcome you to come during the other hour of the Meet Your Teacher Event.

  • Kindergarten through second grade - Tuesday, September 8th from 3:30-5:30. We request that families whose last name starts with A-L arrive between 3:30-4:30 and that M-Z come between 4:30-5:30. If showing up at the time allotted for you family does not work on that day, we still welcome you to show up when you can. We are though trying to space the crowd as much as possible. This is the only evening that our K-2 teachers will be outside.
  • Third grade through fifth grade - Wednesday, September 9th from 3:30-5:30. We request that families whose last name starts with A-L arrive between 3:30-4:30 and that M-Z come between 4:30-5:30. If showing up at the time allotted for you family does not work on that day, we still welcome you to show up when you can. We are though trying to space the crowd as much as possible. This is the only evening that our 3rd-5th grade teachers will be outside.
  • Sixth grade through eighth grade - Thursday, September 10th from 3:30-5:30. We request that families whose last name starts with A-L arrive between 3:30-4:30 and that M-Z come between 4:30-5:30. If showing up at the time allotted for you family does not work on that day, we still welcome you to show up when you can. We are though trying to space the crowd as much as possible. This is the only evening that our 6th-8th grade teachers will be outside.

Welcoming New Staff

  • Lorin Page – Lorin is the newly hired Assistant Principal at Three Rivers
  • Malie Neese – You may remember Malie was our Counseling Intern last year. She is now a half time member of our staff serving in the role of School Counselor
  • Cammie Charles – Cammie joins Mrs. DeGarmo and Mrs. Fender as an additional third grade teacher for this school year. This position was added to accommodate spacing requirements when children return to in-person learning. Many of you know Cammie as our Cross Country and Track coach as well as the Mom of two student Otters, one is now in high school
  • Alicia Deaderick – Alicia joins us as a school counseling inter for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Ben Swinehart – Ben is covering for Nicole Macht in middle school language arts until Nicole returns from her maternity leave following the Thanksgiving break

Family Access Network (FAN) Advocate
Jenn Reuter, our FAN Advocate, is out on family leave. She will be returning in the not too distant future, but in the meantime please contact Mara Stephens for any needs you may be having. Mara can be reached at [email protected], by phone at 541.355.1037, or by text at 541.246.7409.

Meals Program
This week, we received the very good news that the summer meals program is being extended through December 2020. Once we hear the details on how this will work, we will be sure to share that information with you.

Free and Reduced Meals
Even though students will not be in the building as we begin the school year and even though the meals program has been extended, we encourage all families to take a moment to fill out a Free & Reduced Meal application for the 2020-21 school year. Part of the Oregon Student Success Act includes expanded income guidelines for qualifying for free meals. APPLY HERE or stop by the office for a paper copy. You can save $725-$800 per child a year if you qualify for free or reduced priced meals, which includes breakfast and lunch. All grade levels are included. Please see the Oregon Expanded Income Guideline Chart

Family Handbook
Each year, our District office mails out a Family Handbook to all of our families. That publication has been delayed due to the need to update it with current information. Families can expect to receive their Handbook some time during the month of September.

School Office Hours
We are currently open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Labor Day). Once school starts, office hours are M-F, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Stop by and see us or give us a call if you need a hand with anything or have questions. Masks and social distancing are required in the school lobby.

Keeping in Touch
We do our best to share information in a variety of ways. We truly hope you will keep an eye on all of these sources so that you are up to speed with our latest information.

  • Emails – both from Three Rivers School and from your child’s teacher
  • Otter Updates – details for school events, activities, and general information – emailed to all families AND posted on our school website – look for Webster the Otter
  • Check our School Website, including the School Calendar regularly
  • Follow us on FaceBook
  • Call us in the office with questions – 541.355.3000.

We are ready to get this school year started. Despite all of the unknowns, we are approaching it ready to do our very best to serve the Three Rivers students, families and community!
