Realms High School Mission

At Realms Middle and High, our mission is to ignite the passion, build the academic skills, and foster the character our students need to be leaders of change.

We actively challenge our students from all backgrounds to investigate, understand, and become stewards of the human and natural world around us. To do so, we pursue experiences both inside and outside the classroom that help our students develop a core set of academic skills and learning habits; that encourage them to explore and identify their values; and that foster the inspiration that comes through service to others.

Students at Realms High School will graduate with the academic skills necessary to excel in college, the hands on experiences needed to thrive in careers and - most importantly - the character and mindset needed to tackle the most pressing problems facing our communities and planet!

Message From the Principal

Dear Students and Families,

We are excited to introduce you to our school! Realms High School is a choice option school at Bend-La Pine Schools that enrolls approximately 225 9th to 12th grade students, and was founded in 2018 to provide innovative educational options beyond the large comprehensive high school model.

Realms High School was envisioned by a small group of passionate educators, including several veteran Realms Middle School teachers. In designing our high school model, we drew heavily from our work at Realms Middle School and also from several of our other high performing high schools in our EL Education Network. The EL Education model was formed in the early 1980's from two core educational approaches:

  1. Outward Bound, where challenge, teamwork, service and compassion are the curriculum, and the outdoors is the classroom.
  2. Harvard Graduate School of Education, where researchers understood the power of active, inquiry-based learning to transform and improve classrooms in the American school system.

It is this marriage of challenge, teamwork and character development together with a commitment to making rigorous academic content come to life through active and inquiry based learning that lies at the heart of everything we do at Realms High School. Both of these pedagogical traditions require us to put the experience of our students first. We believe in doing school "with students, not to them" and see all members of our community as "crew, not passengers". At Realms High School, our students are leaders, scholars, presenters, artists, athletes, and more. In short, our students are active learners who learn to make the world a better place.

We invite you to visit us, tour, and check out our student work and results.
