Rigor and Relationships

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Pilot Butte Middle School in beautiful Bend, Oregon! We will do whatever it takes to help all of our nearly 700 outstanding students excel. Maintaining high levels of academic rigor, building and strengthening relationships, and ensuring relevant curriculum is key to our success.

IB Middle Years Programme

Our internationally recognized IB-Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages students to become critical and reflective thinkers, and to make connections with the real world through action and service. Pilot Butte students take a diverse mix of eight subjects during their three years at Pilot Butte.

Subjects include:

  • World Languages (French, Spanish and Heritage Spanish)
  • Design: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
  • Arts (performing and visual arts)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Language and Literature
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Physical Education/Health

A balanced and growing mix of extra-curricular activities are also offered, consisting of a variety of clubs and athletics.

Student-Centered

At Pilot Butte Middle School, our vision is to be “recognized as a community of academic excellence, leadership, and character as we embrace diversity and inspire global thinking.” We use a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, with data-based decisions being made depending on what is best for our students. We also focus on how students learn, such as with communication, research, and self-management skills — to help our 21st Century learners as they prepare for the future.

Student Services

Special Education Services

  • Case managers for students who have an individual education plan (IEP) will work with families and teachers to structure supports according to the opportunities and constraints associated with distance learning as mandated by the Oregon Department of Education. Case managers:
    • Ms. Teixeira
    • Ms. Bourlai

Counseling and 504 Plans

  • Families of students who have a 504 plan will continue to work with their guidance counselor for case management
    • Ms. Bacon (All grades L-Z)
    • TBA (All grades A-K)

English Language Learners

  • Families of students who receive English language support will have our new teacher Ms. Corson. She will work directly with teachers and other case managers to provide support and schedule additional instruction if necessary

Speech and Language Services

  • Families of students who receive speech and language support will continue to work with Mr. McCown, and he and will work directly with teachers and other case managers to provide services

Family Access Network



  • FAN advocates link children and families to critical basic need services with the goal of keeping children healthy and in school. FAN provides a direct and convenient way within the school to connect children to vital resources. FAN advocates support our most needy families, removing barriers and paving the way for a child’s success.
  • Families who have material needs should reach out to our F.A.N. advocate.

We want all of our students to be life-long learners who are developing their abilities to self-assess, work collaboratively, and to use inquiry, problem solving, and creativity skills to help make a better world.
