Pilot Butte Middle School

Health and Safety

Over the course of the last few months our school district and PBMS teams have spent a lot of time preparing for the arrival of students in this balanced hybrid model. What follows is a summary of some the measures that we have planned to keep all members of our school community as healthy and safe as possible. A more exhaustive list of precautions can be found at this link on the BLS website.

Cleaning and sanitizing

  • Extensively trained custodial staff that has been refining routines throughout the school closure period
  • Bathrooms cleaned and disinfected throughout the day with a thorough cleaning at night
  • Classrooms cleaned with an electro-static sprayer every evening
  • Desks surfaces disinfected between every class period
  • Shared equipment or supplies disinfected after every use

Student movement

  • Students have received and will continue to receive instructions on staying socially distanced when moving through hallways
  • Students proceed directly to class during passing (no stopping to socialize)
  • Students enter and exit classes in a staggered format to reduce congestion in the hallways
  • Students remain at their adequately spaced desk during class unless directed by their teacher
  • Collaboration among students in class will be socially distanced and for brief periods of time

Teacher movement

  • Teachers limit movements in classrooms to minimize the duration and proximity of interactions with students within safe parameters.
  • Teachers model social distancing in the classroom and in the hallways.
  • In some cases, where teachers and case managers are working in closer proximity with a student to a special support that is needed, they may implement the use of a plexiglass barrier to reduce the risk of disease spread.

Masks

  • All students and staff will wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose at all times unless they individually occupy a space that is enclosed by a door and doesn't share any interior open windows with another person's space.
  • Masks may be removed for eating during the designated breakfast or lunch period when students are with their respective stable cohort and are sufficiently socially distanced.

Eating

  • Whenever possible we will have students eat outside, and if the weather does not permit, we have alternate plans that allow students to stay in their stable cohort and be supervised and sufficiently socially distanced.

Student cohorts

  • Students will attend 4 classes in person when they are on campus. Most of those classes will have between 23-30 students which results in an average cohort size of 90-120 students and 4-5 adults per day.
  • In the event of a positive case and/or potential exposure, we can immediately run a report of all students who would have been potentially exposed and proceed with county directed protocols for contact tracing.

Parent meetings

  • Wherever possible, we will continue to hold meetings with families over WebEx, rather than in person. This includes IEP and 504 meetings as well as routine consultations with teachers and administrators.
