William E. Miller Elementary School
We were unable to have a Kindergarten Orientation this year, so we have created a document which has some helpful information. Kindergarten Orientation Information Here!
With the goal of nurturing globally competent citizens, our Miller community is based on high achievement, positive relationships, environmental stewardship and community service.
Please use the links here to view our current year’s Welcome Back Letter, a letter specifically for our new Kindergarten Parents and our 2019-2020 Parent Handbook which has a wealth of information to answer many of your questions.
Our school building is LEED Gold Certified. This means our building complies with the guidelines from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designs. We have a strong focus on sustainability throughout the building and we ask our staff, students and visitors to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost in our facility. In keeping with our focus on sustainability, we use email for the bulk of our communications to families. Our News From the Den will be emailed to parents bi-weekly. Teachers will email information to parents and post items on their websites.
In Bend - La Pine Schools, all students who are in 3rd grade and up receive an iPad. At Miller Elementary, iPads are used only at school in 3rd and 4th grade. In 5th grade, students are allowed to take their iPads home to complete homework assignments and to prepare them for middle school when they will be completely responsible for their iPads. This technology is beneficial for individualized learning, paperless work completion and research projects that lead to presentations that incorporate the problem solving techniques mentioned above (communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking). The amount of time students spend on the iPad varies, 30 – 90 minutes per day is typical.
At Miller Elementary, our kindergarten – 2nd grade students also have access to a small number of iPads in each classroom. Younger students may use these iPads for some assessments or to practice reading, writing and math learning. These students use iPads approximately 10 minutes a day at the most.
Our students have been going to an SEL class each week for the past 4 years. They have also been participating in a morning meeting each day with their classmates. These meetings help to reinforce what has been learned in SEL and build community within each classroom. For the 2019-20 school year we will not have an SEL class but will continue to teach and implement all the we have learned in our morning meetings and throughout our day at school.
