Updates to Cell Phone Guidelines

Dear Marshall High School Families,

Student safety, intellectual engagement and strong instruction are three of the most important pieces of an effective learning environment. As you are no doubt aware, inappropriate or insensitive use of personal electronic devices in the classroom creates distractions that are disruptive to student attention, learning, and school culture. Starting at the beginning of this school year, we will be taking new steps to minimize classroom distractions created by personal electronic devices.

Our school leadership team has created a policy that will help address student use of these devices during class time and assist them in focusing on being present in class without the distraction of other media.

Effective immediately: Any electronic device to include ear buds not issued by the school will not be used and or/out during scheduled class time. This includes all classrooms, hallways, commons, cafeteria, library, gym and office areas. This new policy includes TA’s and students with an open period.

Students & families will be advised that the policy includes 3 Levels.

  • Level 1: Device is confiscated and locked away securely in the front office until 2:20 p.m. Student is given a verbal warning. Parents are notified.
  • Level 2: Device is confiscated and locked away securely in the front office. Parents are notified and choose from two consequences:
    • Choice A: Parent picks up device at MHS, or Choice B: Student is required to turn device in at the front office each morning for 5 straight school days.
  • Level 3: Device is confiscated and locked away securely in the office. Parents are notified and student is required to turn device in at the front office each morning for 10 straight school days.
  • Further Offenses: REQUIRED Parent meeting with MHS administration; possible suspension from school or alternative placement.
  • Refusal to Turn Over Device: Student will be escorted to the front office and parent will be notified to pick up student. REQUIRED Parent meeting with MHS administration; possible suspension from school or alternative placement.

Responsible Use Reminder: Students are to use electronic devices responsibly and respectfully for positive communication and access to appropriate content. Be aware that taking photos or video of anyone at MHS without their permission is a violation of privacy and is therefore not allowed and against district policy. We understand the need for families to communicate with their students during the school day from time to time. Students can check their cell phones and communicate with families during passing periods, their lunch period, and after school. Parents can contact the school at 541-355-3500 with messages for their children when:

  • The message is URGENT and cannot wait until Lunch (in the AM) or 2:40 pm (in the PM), or if the student does not have a personal cell phone.

Our expectation is that students will experience an academic advantage from a comprehensive school-wide practice, and that their social and emotional health and relationships will benefit. These rules and policies will still be enforced whether a parent/legal guardian signs this document. Thank you for the continued support and partnership in your child’s education!
