School to Careers Credit Programs

School-to-Career (STC) serves to integrate relevant work experience into the academic process and create broad opportunities for all students, whether college-bound or work-bound. If you are interested in one of the programs below, contact the STC Program Manager in College & Careers. Some of the programs are offered at certain times of the year, some can be started at your request (mentorships, internships, job shadows), and others are started when a business posts an opening with our office. Schools will only place students with employers who have agreed to the BLS nondiscrimination agreement.

Work Credit 1 & 2 - .5 credit (each)

Designed to link education and work experience, Structured Work Based Learning (SWBL) takes place at work sites. You can apply for career opportunities posted at your school or enter the program with a job you already have. To be awarded credit through SWBL, you will be expected to complete a student work form, compile work hours, and complete a final evaluation. Students can earn up to 1.0 credits of STC Work credit.

Volunteering/Community Service - .5 credit

Students can earn credit for volunteer/community service work. Volunteer opportunities are connected through our STC/FC at our schools, or they may enter the program if you have already secured a volunteer position on their own. To be awarded credit they are expected to complete a process given to them from their STC. Volunteer work must be for public service or humanitarian purposes and must meet the criteria set by the Bureau of Labor & Industries. This is a great way for students to gain skills and bridge the gap between school and career. Students can earn up to 1.0 credits of STC Volunteer credit.

Internships - .5 credit

Internships are designed to bridge academics and workplace learning. The internship should be aligned with a proposed career pathway and provide a broader understanding in that area. Students will be required to collaborate with the School-to-Career Program Manager in order to be awarded credit. Schools will work with outside partners to place students with employers who have agreed to nondiscrimination. Students can earn up to 1.0 credits of STC Internship credit. (This area also includes Camp Tamarack.)

Cadet Teaching - .5 credit

These are regular forecasted classes and must be added to the student’s schedule by counselor. They are offered during any regularly scheduled class periods only. Students attend each day they have these periods, and it is an independent program. Cadet Teaching students connect with administration and request a teacher mentor at one of our closer elementary or middle schools and ask if they can Cadet Teach with them. Students have requirements for this program that they will work with the FC/STC person to verify. Students interested in a career in Education, Childcare or Psychology would be a perfect fit for these programs, however we encourage all students to take this opportunity to work with the younger students in our community
