What is the difference between a visitor and a volunteer?

A volunteer is defined as a non-paid person functioning within the policies and procedures of the district, who shall serve under the direction of the professional staff of the district to whom he/she is assigned.

A volunteer usually meets all of the following criteria:

· The individual will provide a service to the school.

· The individual will not be compensated monetarily by the district.

· The individual will be providing repeated service at any one site.

· The individual may have access to students while performing this service.

Why does Bend-La Pine Schools require a criminal background check to volunteer with students?

According to Oregon State Law, it is required for any volunteers that have direct, unsupervised contact with students to complete a criminal background check. The safety of our students is of the utmost importance.

What if I have completed a background check somewhere else?

Volunteer applicants are still required to complete a background check through Bend-La Pine Schools.

Will I be required to show Covid-19 documentation to apply?

Effective June 17, 2023 the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for public and private school teachers, staff, and school volunteers (OAR 333-019-1030) was lifted. Volunteers will not be required to show proof of Covid documentation.

When will my application be approved?

The volunteer application and background check takes an average of 5-7 business days to complete. We ask that all volunteers apply at least two weeks ahead of their scheduled volunteer date. You will receive an email informing you of your approval or denial.

Who should I contact regarding my application status, troubleshooting help, or general questions?

Please contact us.

Can I be denied volunteer status even if I have not been convicted of a crime listed under the criteria of GCDA-AP / GDDA-AR: Criminal Records Check / Fingerprinting?

Bend-La Pine Schools reserves the right to exclude any volunteer that it determines would be a potential disturbance to the educational process. Volunteer status can be denied and revoked at any time by the district.

What if I have students at multiple schools or my student is going to a new school next year? Do I need a separate application completed to volunteer at each school?

No. The volunteer application allows for individuals to be approved at all schools for a two year period. Volunteers still need to have a specific volunteer assignment at each school. Please inquire with each school or your new school about the availability of volunteer assignments.

How old do I need to be to apply?

Volunteers must be 18 years or older to apply.
