Bend-La Pine Schools' Parents:
I am writing you with a request to email or call our legislators and to demand that they provide our children with the adequate and stable state education funding that our students need to be successful both today and in the future.
I am asking that you act now... because there has never been a genuine, difference-making opportunity quite like the one we have at this moment.
As I write this email, the Oregon Legislature is on the brink of making the largest investment in our schools in Oregon history. That’s why I am writing today – to ask each and every one of you to contact your legislators and ask them to support this investment in public education.
This will allow us to reduce class sizes, add instructional time for struggling students, and increase health and safety services for our staff and students. (Learn more: Superintendent’s Budget Message)
We have made it quick and easy to do. We ask that you take five minutes to download our sample letter, personalize it a bit, and tell your legislators what this investment would mean for your students and for all the students who attend Bend-La Pine Schools, and urge them to support education.
This is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity for most of us. Since Measure 5 passed in 1990, Oregon has disinvested in education, leading to cuts to teaching and support staff positions, school days, and other programs. Appropriately investing in education today could fundamentally change the trajectory of our schools and the lives of our students – but we need your help to get it across the finish line.
This is a time-sensitive request: please call or submit your letter by next Tuesday, April 23.
Download a sample letter and to find the contact information for your elected officials.
Thank you for all that you do to support Bend-La Pine Schools’ students and staff.
Shay Mikalson, Superintendent
Join us in urging lawmakers to increase state funding for education.
Bend-La Pine Schools Board of Directors and union leadership recently urged Oregon lawmakers to increase funding for Oregon's schools.
Excerpt from the Board of Directors' letter:
We plead with you to make an immediate, permanent investment in our greatest resource: Our future. It’s no exaggeration to say the need is urgent. A growing number of students have behavioral health challenges, traumatic experiences, disconnection, and learning barriers. They need more adults to teach, inspire, and connect with them. Oregon will not thrive in the future if our children are continually under-served.
