Three weeks ago, while helping to make breakfast for staff at one of our middle schools, I was pulled aside by a member of my executive team. He told me that he had just received word of a possible roof collapse at one of our elementary school gyms.
I hope that the following account of what we did next, and through the following weeks, will serve as a historical record for the leaders who will succeed me in the decades to come, a chronicle of events and a path forward.
It is my hope that our readiness, response and recovery may be used by Bend-La Pine Schools and other school districts as model lessons for critical self-reflection on appropriate, proactive response to extreme weather events, like the 100-year snow storm our community has just endured.
Respectfully submitted,
Shay Mikalson
