We are wrapping up this school year by honoring a science teacher who went above and beyond the call of duty in his classroom at Pacific Crest Middle School earlier this year. His name is Mark Segesta.
The following is from Deidre Crabtree, a fellow science teacher at Pacific Crest:
"On February 28, Mark shared with me that he had an 8th grade student choke on gum in his 4th period class. The student couldn’t breathe, so Mark immediately did the Heimlich Maneuver on the student. Mark stated it took a handful of thrusts to remove the gum from the student’s throat. The student ended up being fine and was able to continue his day at school. Mark responded quickly and, fortunately, his training helped prevent a possible tragedy."
In recognition of Mr. Segesta's presence of mind and immediate first aid provided to a student choking in his classroom, we honor him with the Above & Beyond the Call of Duty Award. His actions demonstrated skill, awareness, and courage. By administering the Heimlich Maneuver, he ensured the safety of his student. On behalf of the Bend-La Pine Schools family, thank you!
