Meet December's Champion for Students

Board honors McKinney Vento Program and Foster Care Liaison

Article Date: Dec 13, 2023

Our December Champion for Students is Sandy Schmidt, our McKinney Vento Program and Foster Care Liaison. Sandy ensures that homeless children and teens have access to a public education, despite lacking a fixed place of residence or a supervising parent or guardian.

As a former FAN advocate, Sandy has a long record of supporting our students and families who experience houselessness, frequent transitions, and poverty. She prioritizes belonging and kindness as core values within the services she coordinates, and she approaches each family she serves with empathy and dignity.

“Sandy is one of the strongest advocates for families that I have had the privilege to work with," said Kinsey Martin, the District’s Executive Director of Policy, Advocacy, and Equity. "She deeply understands the gaps in our community’s resources for our families in need, and has built strong connections to local networks of support for helping families navigate. She is calm, patient, creative, and persistent, and is most certainly a champion for the dignity and well being of our students and families.”

Congratulations Sandy, and thank you for all you do in service to students in our community!
