UPDATE SEPT. 11: OSAA Announces Fall Athletics Postponed, More

Article Date: Sep 11, 2020

UPDATE Sept. 11:

From Dave Williams, District Athletic Director:

All summer athletic workouts were cancelled this morning (September 11) due to air quality in our region. This effectively ended summer athletic work and all Bend-La Pine Schools athletics will now pause through September 27 to help in ensuring a successful start to comprehensive distance learning.

Monday, Sept. 28, OSAA season 1 will begin at local high schools. Contact your school's athletic department for specific times and dates for individual programs. Remember for participation in season 1 athletics all athletes are required to register for their sport(s) through their school's Family ID page, have a current physical on file at their school, and suffice OSAA and Bend-La Pine eligibility requirements for participation. Pay-to-play fees for season 1(fall) have been suspended.

Middle school athletics will not be offered in season 1 and we are currently discussing opportunities with community partners for middle school students during this time. We traditionally mirror the high school sports calendar with our middle school offerings and will continue in that direction for seasons 2-4. The tentative start date for middle school season 2 winter sports will be with boy's park and recreation basketball in early November. Girls basketball and wrestling will tentatively follow beginning in January. Fall sports will move to a season 3 later in the school year with the opening dates for season 3 (fall) and season 4 (spring) still to be determined. Early October middle school athletic directors and administration will make decisions on seasons 3 & 4. Look for plans to be communicated through your middle school's athletic department early to mid-October.

Please stay connected with your student's coach and regularly check your schools athletic website for updated details and schedules.

UPDATE AUG 5:

Wednesday August 5, the OSAA announced a modified athletic calendar for 2020-21. We know how important athletics are too many of our students in Bend-La Pine Schools and these sports are an integral part of our school culture and identity.Below is an brief synopsis overview of the OSAA athletic calendars for the 2020-21 school year:

  • Season 1 - 8/31 - 1/3, details to come at a later date
  • Winter Sports (season 1) 12/28 through 3/7
  • Fall Sports (season 2) 2/22 through 5/2 (football will run slightly longer through 5/9)
  • Spring Sports (season 3) 4/19 through 6/27

We understand there will be some overlap between seasons, and will need to work through these issues as we transition from season to season. The main goal is to get students participating in athletics in some capacity during the 20-21 school year. The above schedules are subject to change and rely on Deschutes County meeting state health metrics and our district moving toward in person learning. We will continue to follow all guidelines set by our Governor, Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education.
