Updates About iPads, Summer Learning

Students To Keep Loaners Until Fall

Dear Students and Families,

New this year, students will be allowed to keep their loaner iPads with them throughout the summer months. Therefore, we will not be hosting iPad collection events at your school. This decision was made to both promote safe social distancing and to provide students with a device to continue learning opportunities over the summer.

If you will not be attending a Bend-La Pine Schools program or school next year, please return your iPad, charging brick and cord to your current school. Schools will be communicating their return schedule directly to families. If you will be attending a different Bend-La Pine Schools program or school next year, keep the iPad you have and take it with you to your new site in September. Your student will continue to use their iPad as a tool in their education next school year.

We also know that sometimes plans change during the summer. If you will be moving out of the area or leaving the district during the summer and need to return your iPad, please drop it off Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Education Center located at 520 Wall Street, Bend. Please remember to also return your charging brick and cord at this time. Missing cords are $5 and missing charging bricks are $20.

Summer learning activities are available for students in the elementary and middle school levels. These activities focus on creative projects that utilize common apps students are already familiar with. K-5 students will also have access to the Lexia reading program and the Dreambox math program. All students will have access to Sora, our online library. Students should be able to complete these projects and activities independently, but we encourage parents to play a supporting role with their students and help create a routine for working with the math and reading programs. More information and links to K-8 summer activities will be posted on our district website soon. Additionally, we encourage our high school students to consider taking an online summer class. For those families who purchased insurance this year, coverage will be extended over the summer. Please remember that insurance covers accidental breaks and damage. Insurance covers repair or replacement to any damage done to the iPad in the classroom, on school grounds and anywhere off campus. However, during the summer we would advise families not to take iPads on any summer trips, camping outings, or other outdoor recreation activities. Additionally, those who received a district hotspot may continue using it over the summer. If you are in need of a hotspot please contact your school’s FAN advocate by June 12 to initiate a request.

To assist parents over the summer, information is available on our district website. There you will find information on screen time, settings, and app management. We encourage parents to read the information on this site and familiarize themselves with the ways to best manage iPad use. If any additional support is needed during the summer, our district Help Desk will be available at 541-355-8700, to help troubleshoot hardware issues, connectivity, or student account issues.

We want to thank our parents for all that you’ve done to partner in your student’s education during this challenging time. Our hope is that by providing access to your student’s iPad, we will encourage the continuation of learning over the summer months.
