Alumni Share Knowledge with Current Students

Recent Grads Return to Local High Schools

Article Date: Dec 14, 2018

PRESS RELEASE:

How demanding are college classes? How do college students balance homework with jobs and internships? And how do you find time to do your own laundry? Recent Bend-La Pine Schools graduates will be answering these questions and sharing their tips and knowledge with current high school students planning to pursue post-secondary education during upcoming events at local high schools.

“Our goal is for every student to graduate prepared for career and college and we are excited for our alumni to return and share their experiences at the post-secondary level with current students,” said Superintendent Shay Mikalson. “Giving current students the opportunity to connect with recent graduates is a great way to demonstrate that our graduates are ready for their futures — whether that’s at a university, community college, trade school, military branch or career.”

Returning students will be visiting from a broad range of schools including Stanford University, Wellesley College, Colorado Mesa University, Central Oregon Community College and more. The Class of 2018 earned more than $13 million in college scholarships and approximately 67 percent of Bend-La Pine Schools’ graduates go on to a 2- or 4-year college or university.

Bend Senior High School will host recent graduates during interactive events 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 20 in the Future Center. Graduates from the school’s International Baccalaureate program will visit current IB students at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19 and Friday, Dec. 21.

La Pine High School will host 17 alumni who are currently enrolled in post-secondary education. All current students will rotate and talk with the alumni, who represent a range of experiences — from attending a university away from home to attending a community college and living at home. The event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Mountain View High School will host 10-12 recent graduates on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at noon in the library. The event is aimed at Mountain View seniors who will be able to ask the recent graduates about their experiences and learn more about college life.

Summit High School will host several students throughout the week in individual classrooms. Contact Sondee Low-Johnson for details [email protected]
