Bend-La Pine Schools' Students, Families, Community Partners, and Staff:

As a district, we strive to embrace diversity, to welcome families, and to interrupt discriminatory acts or words whenever they happen. We expect each staff member, student, family, and community member to act respectfully in our schools and to create safe places where each and every child will thrive.

In light of the recent decision to remove protections granted under the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program, or DACA, I wanted to reach out to express the district's deep, ongoing commitment to making our schools safe and welcoming for all.

In addition, we want to remind all our students and families that under federal law, our schools will not ask about or track the immigration status of any student.

Finally, if you or someone you know experiences or sees harassment, bullying or discrimination, encourage him or her to tell an adult at school.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your children.

Sincerely,

Shay Mikalson, Superintendent of Schools
