Lots Going on in Our Schools This Month

The following events are open to the public.


April 4 to 13
Math Curriculum Open House
Members of the public are invited to offer feedback about potential math curriculum options under consideration. Community members can look at the materials, rate the choices and ask questions during these drop-in sessions. The review opportunities will take place for elementary curriculum at Rosland and Silver Rail elementary schools from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; for middle school at Pilot Butte Middle School from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and at La Pine Middle School from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; for high school at Mountain View and La Pine high schools from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

April 6, all day
District Middle School Choir Festival
The Central Oregon middle school choir festival will take place at Crook County High School.

April 7, all day
District Middle School Orchestra Festival
The Central Oregon middle school orchestra festival will take place at Mountain View High School.

April 7, 5 to 7 p.m.
STEAM Night at La Pine Middle School
The school will celebrate all things Science Technology Engineering Art and Math.

April 9
Battle of the Books State Competition at Chemeketa Community College in Salem
Three teams from Bend-La Pine Schools — Lava Ridge Elementary School, Cascade Middle School and Mountain View High School — will attend the state contest, after placing first at the regional Battle of the Books competition. The teams will be preparing for the state contest prior to the event. The state competition is open to the public.

April 9
Westside Village Magnet School Students Drum at Spring Festival
Two drumming groups will perform at the Bend Spring Festival. The WVMS Roots Rhythm Younger Drumming Group performs from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.; the Older and Elder group performs 2:30 to 3 p.m.

April 9, 7 p.m.
"Cinderella" Performance at Tower Theatre
Three Rivers School stages its performance of "Cinderella" at the Tower Theatre. Tickets cost $6 adults, $4 students and children.


April 11, 1 to 6 p.m.
Job Fair at Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center
Hundreds of prospective teachers and other certified staff members are expected to attend our annual Job Fair, which is held in conjunction with several other local school districts. April 12, 6 to 7 p.m.
Pacific Crest Middle School Orientation
Incoming sixth-graders and their families are invited to the school to learn about available programs, meet staff and more.

April 12, 6 p.m.
Harlem Wizards Perform at Summit High School
The basketball team will perform crazy dunks, fun tricks and more while battling against a team of Bend-La Pine Schools students and teachers during this event, which is also a fundraiser for Cascade Middle School’s Sparrow, Lilly. Open to the public, doors open at 5 p.m. Advance tickets: $12 general admission, $10 students; at the door $15 general admission, $12 students. April 14
No school, Bend-area middle schools.

April 15
No school, Bend-area middle and high schools.

April 15, 6 p.m.
DECA Fashion Show at Bend Senior High School
The 10th annual DECA Silent Auction and Fashion Show will take place in the Bend Senior High School Commons area. The event is a fundraiser for the DECA students to attend the international competition in Nashville this year, as the school has 10 students who qualified. Tickets are $15 VIP (front row), $10 adults, $5 students. Open to the public. Contact Kristen Torkelson for more information at 541-355-3877.

April 20
Kindergarten Registration
Incoming kindergarteners for the 2016-17 school year and their families are invited to attend events at neighborhood schools on this day to register for kindergarten. Contact neighborhood schools for details about events. At many schools, parents will be able to meet the teachers and learn more about the school while registering. More info: http://bit.ly/1V1gftw

April 21, 5:30 p.m.
Art Night at Summit High School
Summit is hosting its first ever Evening of the Arts, to highlight student work in art, music and theater. The event will take place in the school’s commons and is open to the public. Tickets are $3 students, $5 adults. Individuals can also purchase joint tickets for the Evening of the Arts and the opening night of “The Grapes of Wrath” for $5 students or $8 adults. The proceeds will be split between the Rwanda Desk Fund and arts programs at Summit.

April 21-24
“The Grapes of Wrath” at Summit High School
Students perform a play based on the John Steinbeck novel. Open to the public. April 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and April 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 general admission and $5 students and seniors ($1 off with a canned food donation).

April 21, 6 to 7 p.m.
High Desert Middle School Orientation
Incoming sixth-graders and their families are invited to the school to learn about available programs, meet staff and more.

April 25, 6 to 8 p.m.
Town Hall with Dr. Salam Noor at High Desert ESD Offices
Community members are invited to attend an event to Reimagine Education in Oregon with Dr. Salam Noor, the Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction from the Oregon Department of Education. He will discuss the state’s education initiatives. Those in attendance will be able to contribute to the discussion of student success and ask questions. Event takes place at the Board Room at High Desert Education Service District, 2804 SW Sixth St., Redmond. Free and open to the public.

April 27, 11:15 a.m.
Juniper Elementary School Hosts PreK Story Hour
Deschutes Public Library brings a puppet show to the school. Free and open to the public.

April 28, 6 to 8 p.m.
Night of the Arts at La Pine High School
This student showcase is open to the public.

April 28 to May 1
“Dearly Beloved” at Mountain View High School
The high school puts on its spring play “Dearly Beloved.” Times are April 28-30 at 7 p.m. and May 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5.

April 30, 5:30 p.m.
Village Rhythm & Blues
Westside Village Magnet School hosts its 12th annual fundraising dinner and auction put on by the Friends of Westside Village Magnet School to benefit the school. The event takes place at Bend Elks Lodge. Open to the public. Tickets are $35 per person. Information at http://friendsofwvms.com
