Middle School Science

The Bend-La Pine Middle Schools Science program actively engages students in an inquiry-based, learning environment that teaches scientific habits of mind, develops critical thinking skills and empowers students to grow as scientifically literate citizens. Each year, from 6th grade to 8th grade, students study the Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) and Crosscutting Concepts from Physical Science, Life Science, Earth/Space Science and Engineering Design while engaging in the Science and Engineering Practices (SEP)used by scientists to investigate the natural world, and engineers to design and build solutions to local and global problems. Acting as scientists and engineers, students will:

  • Ask questions and define problems
  • Develop and use models
  • Plan and carry out investigations
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Use mathematics and computational thinking
  • Construct explanations and design solutions
  • Engage in argument from evidence
  • Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information
