Focus on Literacy: A Reading Initiative for Young Readers

Reading lays the groundwork for every subject a child will study in school. Bend-La Pine Schools is committed to ensuring that every student is able to read at grade level by third grade. Giving young readers the best start possible will provide a strong foundation for their entire educational career.

Elementary Instruction

The elementary school core curriculum focuses on the basics of reading, speaking, listening, language, writing, math, science, health, social studies, handwriting, art, physical education, music, media and computer skills. Literacy instruction is a critical part of every elementary student's growth, so principals and teachers are encouraged to structure the school day so that literacy instruction is not interrupted. The district also strives for lower K-3 class sizes and provides additional academic support for students who need it.

Physical Education / Wellness

Silver Rail Elementary recognizes the importance of a whole child education who are truly future ready and prepared to be healthy and well throughout their lifetimes. We acknowledge the need for children to be active throughout their day and that children need to develop knowledge of their own physical systems and how to evaluate and plan for their own personal well being.

Physical Education at Silver Rail strives to “develop physically literate children who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity”. Physical Education focuses on standards-based outcomes to use current and effective lesson planning that maximizes movement and activity during student time in a diverse, fun and well-planned lesson that meets the different needs of all students. We want kids to move and have fun!

We also have a commitment to helping children understand how to navigate a complex and stressful world through self-regulation. We are working to incorporate curriculum such as Mind Up! to teach our students concentration, problem-solving and self-awareness.

At Silver Rail kindness matters and a healthy person is a kind person.
