About Juniper Elementary Technology Magnet

At Juniper Elementary Technology Magnet (JETM), our vision is to create a learning environment that uses best practices and 21st century instructional tools to support academic excellence and create future-ready students. Using technology maximizes student engagement, increases feedback for growth, extends differentiation, and prepares our students for the changing future. Like any traditional school, we teach foundational skills in reading, writing, and math using paper and pencil, but overlay a computer science curriculum in all grade levels which maintains a healthy balance of targeted screen time. Specifically, we use Code.org which is set up to create an engaging and relevant class that helps students uncover and develop the knowledge they need. The teacher acts as the Lead Learner whose role shifts from being the source of knowledge to being a leader in seeking knowledge. These experiences empower students to become creative, productive, socially responsible, life-long learners, and problem solvers who successfully contribute to a culturally diverse and technologically evolving society. Additionally, students participate in a devoted tech week once a month and a unique tech buddy program, where older and younger students learn together. Many students have digital tools through the Bend-La Pine Schools digital conversion initiative. JETM stands apart by implementing a CS curriculum and devoting increased professional development to enhance our tech fluency as Lead Learners.

JETM was identified as a 2015 Model School and received the highest rating - a Level 5 - from the Oregon Department of Education. JETM is also an Apple Distinguished School and is home to the 2016 Oregon Teacher of the Year. Juniper is a Title 1 school with a diverse community of approximately 500 students.
