Highland Magnet at Kenwood School

Welcome to Highland

School Lunch Plan

Students will be eating meals outside with few exceptions. Our outdoor areas will be the courtyard, between the buildings, and the space immediately behind the main building. Mats and chairs will be available for students and 6-feet of distance is required.

In the event weather prevents outside lunch, we will use classrooms, hallways and cafeteria to space students out appropriately while eating in accordance to a seating chart.

School Lunch/Hot Lunch is free to all students this year. Students eating hot lunch will pick up their meal in the cafeteria and then walk to their eating area.

Scottish Storyline Magnet

We greatly appreciate community interest in Highland Magnet School. Highland enrollment is typically around 390 students, with students drawn from across the Bend La Pine School District through the magnet school enrollment lottery process. We are a dynamic Storyline community which shares a commitment to high academic standards and unique learning experiences, which result in creating well educated individuals.

Highland’s magnet school focus is the Scottish Storyline method of teaching and all of Highland’s teachers are well trained in the method. The Storyline method is based on the theory that knowledge is complex and many-layered, that learning is guided by one’s prior knowledge and experience, and that learners construct their own meaning through action and experience.

Each Storyline creates a creative context for learning and active student involvement with opportunities to develop understanding while adhering to Bend-La Pine School policies and Oregon state academic standards. Students work to meet established learning benchmarks through meaningful activities that provide for authentic assessment.

During each Storyline, students create a setting, become characters and solve problems as incidents in the story unfold. For example, students might become astronauts of the future with a mission to colonize Mars, create and operate a bakery or become pioneers on the Oregon Trail. The learning is hands-on and requires cooperative learning as students collaborate and work together.

Each Storyline includes a culminating activity that provides a forum for students to share their new knowledge and talents with others. This may be through a presentation for parents and/or other students, a field trip, or community outreach.

Up-to-date technology is used for topical learning and relevant research. A process of activity and reflection, generated from the Storyline, motivates students to extend their skills and helps prepare them for life beyond their school years.

In support of Highland’s focus on high academic standards, we provide regular PE and music classes, reading specialists, math specialists, speech support, and long-term projects for TAG-identified students, as well as extra-curricular clubs and activities.
