Principal's Letter

Dear Highland Families,

I can't believe we are down to the last 17 days of school. This year has flown past. Looking back from the beginning of the year to now, it feels so great to see Highland traditions returning. Coming up we have many “normal” Highland events including: in person culminations, the variety show, field day, and an in school 5th grade promotion. I always look forward to seeing the community at these end of year events, and am especially looking forward to this year after the 2 year hiatus!

As the year winds up I wanted to do a quick reminder about student drop off and pick up.We are noticing more families pulling to the side of the road on Newport right in front of the office for a quick drop off. This is not a safe drop off zone, please use the designated pull out area on Newport or park and walk. I know the mornings can be tough, but we would rather you be a minute or two late than unsafe.

Have a wonderful weekend and best of luck to our highland students racing in the PPP!

Sincerely,

Brian Kissell

Roots and Shoots

Roots and Shoots

The Roots and Shoots Club at Highland will be hosting a Vans Sample Sale. As we have done in the past, we will be selling Vans brand clothing at a great price! Next Thursday, May 26th we will have tables set up on the playground after school. Come find some great clothes at a great price and help the Earth's oceans!

The Roots and Shoots Club will be donating all proceeds to ocean clean up!

Ocean trash is a global problem. 380 million tons of plastic bottles, bags, fishing gear, and thousands of other types of trash end up in the ocean every year. Help our club help our Earth! We look forward to seeing you then!

Highland Variety Show

We are planning for an in-person variety show this year. Auditions will start today and run through Thursday 5/26, mainly after school for those who already registered. Please keep your act between 20-80 seconds. All acts must be appropriate and well-prepared on audition day to be included. Many will be shortened, as needed, to keep our show under 90 minutes. This year we must limit our show to 100 participants. Priority will be given to well-prepared acts and acts involving 4th and 5th grade students. Parents can help avoid disappointment by monitoring their students' plans and progress and encouraging their children to "wait till next year" if they think their student may not be well prepared by audition day. Traditionally the Highland Variety Show strives to be a very inclusive event, however we must operate a little differently this year - thank you for understanding!

Ms. Greene is especially needing volunteers to support with paperwork, which can be done at home. Please email her ASAP if you are able to support in this way, or with any other questions you might have: [email protected]

School Wide Character Trait for May: Mindset

Our character trait for the month of May is Growth Mindset. Having a growth mindset: Loves a challenge and sees failures as a way to grow, learn and stretch out abilities. A fixed mindset: avoids a challenge and assumes that character, intelligence and creative ability are unchangeable. Thanks to the neurplacity of our brains, we can change our mindset. Here is a helpful article from The Greater Good called, Three Mindsets that can Help Students Succeed. I also really enjoy The Big Life Journal and Podcast for helping kids with their growth mindset! Last but not least, my favorite book right now for reading to k-5 students is, After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again by Dan Santat.

Be Well,

Heidi Thomas

Mileage Club- Volunteers Needed

We need your help to make this very popular lunchtime running program work. Please use this link to sign up to volunteer: https://app.planhero.com/gatherings/8700-spring-mileage-club-2022. Since we can now have volunteers at school, Mileage Club volunteers will sign-in through the office (you need to be cleared as a volunteer) and be on the playground. Students run during lunch recess on Tuesdays and Thursdays through June 2. Students may also log miles at home with parents emailing them to "[email protected]".
