Principal Letter

Dear Highland Families,

Congratulations to all our 5th graders! Our graduation was a very different and memorable experience yesterday and we hope you enjoyed your moment of celebration. We wish you all the best with your transition to middle school and I look forward to watching your future success. Thank you to all our parents for making it work so smoothly! Thank you also to all our staff for creating such a fun environment.

With things winding down, we are all struggling with the need to provide decent closure to the weird school year. Our teachers planned some final pick-up/drop-off times to exchange the necessary materials; but more importantly, to get one last chance for some face-to-face goodbyes and air-hugs. It’s a poor substitute compared to our typical ending of the school year, but I appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep us safe.

On behalf of all the staff, I would like to thank everyone, especially our PTO, for organizing the staff appreciation events, notes, cards, messages, flowers, and anything else I might have missed. Love and kindness are the two obvious themes for every message. The final Vidhug video, we saw today, was extremely touching.

    Summer Meal Program

‘Grab and Go’ Meals Continue Through Summer

Bend-La Pine Schools served 283,000 free meals through end of May

Bend-La Pine Schools’ Grab and Go free meals for children will be extended beyond the end of the school year and through summer months in order to continue to meet the needs of the local community, according to Bend-La Pine Schools’ Nutrition Services.

“We are excited to be able to continue to serve free meals at our school sites throughout the summer months to create continuity for our families, many of whom have come to rely on these free meals. We are currently serving approximately 7,500 meals every day – way beyond our typical free summer meal program,” said Garra Schluter, Nutrition Services Supervisor.

Since the Grab and Go program began in mid-March, it has continued to expand, offering breakfast and lunch at all sites and takeaway weekend meals at some sites. Through the end of May, Bend-La Pine Schools has served 283,000 free meals through this program.

The free meals are available to children age 0 to 18, Monday to Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Visitors are asked to enter through designated doors, pick up a meal from the cafeteria and then take the meal to go. Gathering is discouraged.

Bend-La Pine Schools custodial staff will be cleaning before and after each meal. Adults can purchase a meal for $4.
