Principal’s Letter

Dear Highland Families;

Please be sure to scroll down to the Site Council message and complete the quick survey.

The following information is intended to help you understand a little more about our placement process for the upcoming year.

Highland teachers do their very best in placing students for the upcoming school year. We are not able to accommodate parent requests for specific teachers and ask that parents refrain from sharing their preferences with teachers, other parents, and their children. Your children need to understand they can be successful in any class with any teacher and we depend on you to make sure that message is reinforced.

We start our placement process in May and often the process continues right up to the time we post class assignments in August.

Placement of students is multi-faceted. The current teacher makes an initial placement for next year taking the following into account;

  • Teacher’s knowledge of a student’s
    • Learning style
    • Peer relationships
    • Socio-emotional needs
    • Academic strengths and challenges
  • Student data - Reading, Math & Writing Assessments
  • Parent Placement Profile describing a child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and personality characteristics.

Classes are balanced;

  • Grade Level (blended classrooms)
  • Gender
  • TAG (Talented & Gifted)
  • Special Needs
  • Medical
  • Other factors

Modifications are on-going and occur right up until the day before class lists are shared. These changes are typically done in consultation with the teachers. Things that can impact these modifications include (but are not limited to);

  • Teachers changing to different grade levels
  • The hiring of new teachers
  • Students moving out of the area
  • Students enrolling off the waitlist
  • Students with new medical, academic, or behavioral needs

Thanks for taking the time to read this and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian Kissell
