Principal’s Letter

Dear Highland Families,

Thank you to all our parent volunteers who helped us navigate our picture day on Wednesday. Your contribution makes this process go so much more smoothly and swiftly and we all appreciate you!

Today we practiced a lockdown drill. It is unfortunate, and sad, we must take time to drill for potentially horrific incidents. However, it is best to provide some form of preparation for our students and staff. Please know this is done in the most developmentally appropriate manner possible for each of our classes; kindergarten students receive instruction about what to do during the lockdown that is different from a 4th or 5th grader, but still right for their age. We try to keep the drill low-key and calm to reduce any chance of scaring students, but if you hear anything alarming from your children please do not hesitate to contact us and let us know. I also want to express my appreciation to a significant number of parent-volunteers who were on campus during the drill; your presence and feedback is incredibly valuable, so thank you very much. If you have any questions or concerns, please come talk to me.

Now for some great news! Thanks to one of our parents, Jefferson Jacobs, Bend Pine Nursery and our district landscaping crew, Highland now has a new Mountain Ash (also known as a Rowan tree in Scotland) planted in the west lawn. Some of you may remember the large, gnarled, character-laced tree with a ton of color that use to live between the old gym and the main building. Sadly, the tree was diseased and could not be saved and relocated with the new construction. However, thanks to the generosity of Bend Pine Nursery we can now watch this new tree grow and develop for generations.
