From my 14 years of being involved in classroom placement of students, the one thing I know for sure is that most children will do well in most any classroom. This is because students are generally open, flexible, and ready to learn! While it is true that each teacher has his/her own personal teaching style, it is also true that students routinely respond well to a wide variety of styles and personalities. And what a life skill that is!
Our process for class placement involves grade level teachers working together to create balanced student populations for every classroom. That means that certain considerations are given careful thought: gender, academic performance, special needs (physical, cognitive, social, & emotional), attendance, personality combinations, parent input, as well as other extenuating circumstances that may exist. For this reason, specific teacher requests cannot be honored. The proposed class lists are then also reviewed by teaching specialists, office staff, and building administrators. Because enrollment can shift significantly over the summer months, class lists continue to be revised as new students are enrolled and existing students are transferred out. This process takes time and can sometimes be delayed as we wait for funding and hiring decisions to be made.
Parents and students will be notified of their specific classroom placement at our annual Back-to-School Open House in late August. This is a great time to come in to school, find the classroom and meet the teacher! Watch for a summer mailing in late August for the correct date and time.
In the meantime, you can help us with this process by notifying our office if your child(ren) will not be returning to Jewell for the 2014-15 school year. If you require an out-of-area change approval because you live in another school's zone area, please be sure to ask at our front desk for the appropriate form and we'll help you complete this process. If you'd like to provide additional information for us to consider for your child's placement, there is a Parent Input form available from our front office. Again, specific teacher requests will not be honored. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please give me a call at 541-355-2102.
