Spring brings with it many things - rain showers, daffodils, and baseball! It also brings state testing for our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Jewell students will be involved with state testing during the weeks of April 14-18th and April 21-25th. A second round of testing for those students needing it will be conducted the week of May 12-16th. Mark your calendars!
This spring, students in Oregon will be assessed using the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (otherwise known as OAKS) for the very last time. This is because Oregon has adopted the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). With the new standards, come new assessments! Beginning next year, students will be assessed using a new tool - the Smarter Balanced Assessment. You can learn moe about this assessment at http://www.smarterbalanced.org/.
All teachers in Bend-LaPine Schools have been working hard over the last couple of years to learn all they can about the new Common Core State Standards. They have already begun making adjustments and changes to both curriculum and instruction as they continue their efforts to provide a rich and meaningful education for all students. You can learn more about the CCSS at http://www.corestandards.org/.
No matter what the assessment, here are a few tips for parents as to how they can help their child(ren) be ready to do their best!
1. Avoid scheduling appointments/vacations during the school's testing window.
2. Make sure your child has a good night's rest (at least 8 hours) each night.
3. Be sure to arrive on time each day.
4. Have your child eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast.
5. Encourage your child to do his/her very best to "SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW!"
