Dear Lava Ridge Families,
Welcome to Lava Ridge! My name is Gary DeFrang and I am excited and humbled to serve as Principal in the Land of the Lions. This marks the 22nd year our school has served the learning needs of our students and we are set to build this year on our past successes as we work to develop a love of learning in all of our students and the skills they will need to be successful in the world.
This is my 22nd year in education and prior to leading at Lava, I served as the Principal at High Desert Middle School in Bend and as an Assistant Principal at Mountain View High School. As a teacher most of my career was spent as a 6th grade classroom teacher in the Tigard-Tualatin School District, while also coaching high school swimming and water polo.
At Lava Ridge, we are committed academically to making sure each student learns the Common Core State Standards. While teaching the standards, we want to make sure students are exposed to a variety of learning styles and develop a love of learning. We also want to make sure each student gets the support he/she needs to be successful. We are proud of the academic progress our school has made.
At Lava Ridge, we use the PBIS (Positive Behavior and Support) program to develop and maintain an excellent learning culture. We have consistent and common rules throughout the school and make sure that all students are taught these school-wide expectations for common areas and playgrounds at the beginning of the year. This system is very proactive and helps reinforce students that make good decisions.
The Lava Ridge staff is here to serve you. Students are most successful when school personnel work closely with parents to meet the unique needs of each individual student. You are invited and encouraged to participate in, and get involved with, your child's education in any way possible.
We look forward to working with you to ensure your child's success.
