La Pine High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) team brought home a big win from the National FBLA Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia last month. The students, testing their skills against the best and the brightest business students from schools around the country, placed fifth-place in the Business Ethics competition at the June event.

The Business Ethics team includes sophomore Erica Janssen and senior Stacey Harder, who competed against 98 other teams to win. The school sent six students who had placed first or second at the state conference to compete in nationals.

This is the second consecutive year La Pine students have qualified to attend the national competition. The school's success has resulted in an increase in student membership, growing by almost 50 percent this year. "We are proud of all of our members in FBLA. This success really helps us build our business program at La Pine High School," said Steve Parnell, Business Teacher and Co-Adviser FBLA.

Competition is only a part of the national conference, which also includes a variety of business leadership workshops and events, such as Career Development and Business Etiquette. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is the premier organization for student leaders preparing for careers in business, management, entrepreneurship, and information technology.

"This conference was an experience of a lifetime for these students," said Stacey Yeager, Office Manager and Co- Advisor FBLA. "Our members and team represented Oregon and La Pine High School well and competed with the best in the nation. They will look back and build on this experience. We look forward to another successful and record breaking year in 08-09."

Other Oregon schools also did well this year with 15 teams from other Oregon High Schools placing in the top 10 at the conference. In all, more than 10,000 students from all over the United States participated.

Also participating on the La Pine High team at the national competition were Kayla Morgan, Nygil McCune, Scott Perkins, and Spencer Miller.

The Bend-La Pine Schools Summer Lunch program will kick off June 16 at nine locations throughout Bend and La Pine. The free lunch program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, expects to serve more than 31,000 nutritious meals to children during summer vacation.

"School lunches are the main source of nutrition for many students," said Terry Cashman, director of Nutrition Services for Bend-La Pine Schools. "In our district, 35 percent of students - 5,400 - receive free or reduced-price meals each school year."

Cashman says that the summer lunch program ensures that every student has access to a well-balanced meal year round. "School may be out for the summer, but we still need to make sure kids have a healthy meal every day," he adds.

Free lunches will be offered Monday through Friday, June 16 through August 22. All children, ages 18 and younger, are welcome to receive a lunch at no cost. Lunches include a sandwich or hot entrée, fruit, vegetable, low fat milk, and an occasional dessert.

Parents are encouraged to attend, and may bring their own lunches, but cannot eat any of their child's lunch. However, parents may purchase a meal of their own for $3. Registration is not needed to participate.

Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 16 through August 22. Lunch will not be available on July 4.
La Pine High School Life Skills students will show off their green thumbs next week at the Hawk Country Greenhouse fourth annual Mother's Day Plant Sale. The event, May 6-9 at La Pine High School, is the culmination of a yearlong curriculum designed to teach students about plant growth and care and to learn additional marketable business skills. The sale will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Veterans of this sale know to show up early for best selection. Hundreds of people attend and, according to Life Skills Advisor Ken Thorp, there is usually a line to get in on the first day.

"People start arriving at 8:45 a.m. on the first day," he said. "We are swamped. People stand in lines 30 deep."

Plant lovers can add to their gardens at good prices. This year, students also made wood planter boxes to sell. Prices for the boxes are $16 with four plants or $10 empty. Plant prices range from $.75 for annuals to $17 for large hanging baskets. Plant selection includes perennials, herbs, pansy pots and smaller hanging baskets.

The program is self-supporting. Proceeds from the sale go to purchase plant supplies for next year's curriculum and sale. The 18-20 students learn valuable skills from this program. In addition to nursery skills, they learn good work skills.

"The goal of the program is to help students develop good people and communication skills and establish a good work ethic," said Thorp. "Students take pride in their work. They get a chance to handle money and run a cash register," he said.
