Claire Gibson (2nd Grade Teacher) has received the Excellence in Education award that is given by the Rotary Club of Bend each year. The Rotary Club recognizes an outstanding educator from each building every spring. Prior winners from Jewell include Kristi Erickson, Sean Reinhart, and Nanda Webb.

Jewell Elementary School, and our Physical Education Teacher--Collin Brooks, have received the prestigious STAR Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education for having an outstanding physical education program. Jewell is the only elementary school in the State of Oregon, and is one of twelve nationally to receive this award. Mr. Brooks and Mr. Reynolds accepted this award at the national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in San Diego on April 1st.

Jewell Elementary School was recently honored as a "Champion" school in the Oregon Celebrating Student Success Program. Jewell was one of seven schools in the entire state of Oregon to receive this award. The award was given in recognition of high achievement levels, innovative educational programs, and for dramatically closing the achievement gap between subgroups of students. Oregon State Superintendent of Public Education, Susan Castillo, presented the award at an awards ceremony and dinner in Portland, and personally visited Jewell to see programs in action. Wells-Fargo Bank also presented Jewell with a $3,000.00 grant to support programs.

Jewell fourth grade teachers received a highly competitive technology grant in the amount of $275,000.00 to support 21st century classroom technologies and to implement strategies to increase student writing skills and achievement.
