Counseling Department Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I contact my child's teachers?

  • Use School e-mail. Teacher e-mails are listed under general information and websites are listed under academics on this website.
  • Telephone calls. If you don't have a direct line, the main office can assist you at 355-7600.

2. How does my child get his or her schedule changed?

  • Changes are made for wrong grade level class placement.
  • Changes are made for band skill level-talk to your band teacher.

3. Who do I contact if I am having a problem with a teacher?

  • Have you talked with the teacher first?
  • Call counseling for assistance if the problem is not resolved.

4. My child is not turning in assignments. What should I do?

  • Discuss the issue with your student; contact teachers; keep communication open.
  • Call the counseling department to work on problem-solving.

5. Do I have the right to know what my child is seeing the counselor about?

  • Minors are provided some level of confidentiality; discuss with your child's counselor.
  • Problem solving with families is a major focus of school counseling.

6. What types of things must school personnel report to parents or the public authorities?

  • Student reports of physical or sexual abuse.
  • Suicidal ideation; harm to self or others; threats of violence.

7. My child is on an IEP (Special Education). Who do I talk to about their education?

  • Contact the special education case manager.

8. My child is being bullied at school. Who do I talk to?

  • Discipline is usually handled by administrative staff.
  • Contact a counselor for help with interpersonal skills.

9. My child received an inappropriate text message from a student during non-school hours.

  • Outside of school, parents should try to resolve the situation.
  • Contact the school and/or police if messages are of a threatening or violent nature.

10. I think my child has a learning problem. Who do I contact?

  • We have a district-wide process for determining appropriateness for special services.
  • Call the counseling department for guidance.
