Students coming to Cascade as 6th graders
from one of the Bend elementary schools are generally placed into one
of three levels (1A, 1AB, or 2A) by their 5th grade teachers. 6th
graders who are new to the district and other incoming students are
asked to take a placement test to help determine the appropriate math
class. Placement is not an exact science, so students and parents
should communicate with their teachers to ensure the best fit.
While most incoming 6th graders start in 1AB, some will need the
additional support of a more fundamental class (1A) and some will seek
the challenge of a more advanced course (2A). 6th graders who start in
1AB may be advised to take 2AB, which compresses two years of math into
one class. While this class is not as comprehensive as the 2A - 2B
sequence, it does provide students with the opportunity to take 3AB at
CMS. Additionally, there will be times that a student has struggled
with the material in a particular course and may be advised to repeat
the course the following year. These situations are handled on a case
by case basis through discussions with the math teacher.
