The eighth grade Humanities program encompasses reading, writing, speaking and American History, meeting for two periods called Language Arts and Social Studies. In reading the emphasis is on comprehension and preparation for high school and the demands of reading across the content areas. Students will experience novels, essays, plays, poetry, short stories, textbooks and primary source documents. The writing process will include a special emphasis on research, using technology, and correct MLA citations, preparing students for high school. Public speaking will include opportunities to face large and small groups, and will focus on content, organization, word choice and delivery. American History spans the pre-Columbian period to Reconstruction and beyond, focusing on Constitutional issues and the impact of yesterday’s events on modern life. 8th grade Humanities teachers from left to right: Mrs. Watkins, Mrs. Hofmann, Ms. Martens, Mrs. Smoot |
