July, 2012:  Summit High Comes in Second in Nation for Inaugural MaxPreps Cup

Using a formula designed to determine the top prep programs in the country, the MaxPreps Cup recognizes the Top 25 high school
sports programs in the nation, as well as the top overall program in each state.  The formula is based on a team placing first or
second in the state finals of a sport, with points weighted based on the size of the playoff division, size of the state and the type
of sport.  Congratulations to Summit High as they placed first in the state and second in the nation!

Summit High took home 10 state championships in Oregon, winning titles in boys and girls track, boys and girls swimming,
boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball, girls golf and boys and girls tennis.  What a year!

May 27, 2012:  La Pine Boys Track Team Wins at State

Congratulations to the La Pine High boys track team in winning their first state title at the Class 4A state track championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. 



May 27, 2012:  Summit Boys and Girls Track Teams Sweep Titles at State Again

Congratulations to the Summit High School boys and girls track teams in taking first place at the Class 5A state championships held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, becoming the first school to win back-to-back titles in both boys and girls track.  The girls team has now won six consecutive titles.  Ashley Maton (1500), Lucinda Howard (triple jump) and the 400-relay team (Megan Buzzas, Sarah Frazier, Olivia Singer and Alexa Thomas) winning individual titles. For the boys, Michael Wilson (400, 300 hurdles), Bradley Laubacher (high jump), and the 400-relay team (Nathan Lybarger, Michael Wilson, Cole Thomas, T.J. Peay) won individual titles.

May 21, 2012:  Summit Girls Win First Class 5A State Tennis Title

Congratulations to the Summit High School girls tennis team in winning their first state title at the Class 5A state championships at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.  Sophomore Lindsey Brodeck was the singles finalist, losing a tough three-set championship match.  Other team members:  Hannah Shephard, Morgan DeMeyer, Haley Younger, Kelsey Collis, Kacie Evans, Haley Dodson, Lisa Caine.

Summit High senior Paxton Deuel won his second consecutive boys singles title, helping the boys team also win the state team championship (third title in four years).  The Summit team scored a record 27 points (the old state record was 14.5 points).  The three-day state tournament was held at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.  Congratulations to all players for their great season!

May 21, 2012:  Mountain View Boys Doubles Team Wins State Tennis Title

Congratulations to the Mountain View High School boys doubles team of Matt Van Hemelryck (on left in photo) and Matt Larraneta (on right in photo) in winning the doubles championship at the Class 5A state championships held at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.  They faced the Summit's doubles team of Scott Parr and Lionel Hess in the final, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.  The Mountain View boys team came in third place overall at the state championships.

May 16, 2012:  Summit Girls Take State Golf Title for 4th Straight Year

Congratulations to the Summit High School girls golf team in their repeat win of the Class 5A state title at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.  Freshman Madison Odiorne won the individual title.  It was Summit's sixth state title in the last seven years.  Other team members:  Madi Mansberger, Kristen Parr, Megan Mitchell and Ashley Dolinar.

The Bend High's girls golf team took 2nd place.  Six girls from Summit, Bend High and Mountain View placed
in the top 10!

Summit High's boys golf team tied for 2nd place at the Class 5A state championships at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell.



May 15, 2012:  Summit High Wind Ensemble Wins State ChampionshipSchoolCenter Picture

Summit High School's band repeated at state champions at the State 5A Band Championships held at Oregon State University.   Congratulations on a great year!

 



May 2, 2012:  National Merit WinnerSchoolCenter Picture

Bend Senior High School's Jacob Waggoner was named one of Oregon's 27 National Merit Scholarship winners.  He scored in the top one-percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT as juniors last year.  Jacob will receive a $2,500 college scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.   Congratulations!

 



April 10, 2012:  2012 JROTC Color Guard State ChampionsSchoolCenter Picture

Congratulations to Mountain View High School's NJROTC Color Guard in winning at the state championships held at the East Valley High in Yakima, WA, on March 3, 2012.  While winning their 2nd consecutive title, they also won the inaugural league "Sportsmanship Award."



March 3, 2012:  Bend High Boys and Girls Ski Teams Win at OSSA Championships SchoolCenter Picture

The Bend High Ski teams won the boys and girls overall team titles at the six-team Oregon School Ski Association's championships held at Mt. Bachelor ski area.   Bend High's Keenan Seidel (see photo at right) won the individual title.  The Summit High boys and girls teams finished in second place.  Congratulations!

March 15, 2012:  Scholastic Art and Writing Awards National Gold Medal Winners SchoolCenter PictureSchoolCenter Picture

Pilot Butte Middle School's Maisy Washakta and Mountain View High's Anabel Willis have each won a National Gold Medal from Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Maisy won for her photograph entitled "Buddha" and Anabel won for her drawing "Flight into Fight."  Both have been invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall, New York City, on June 1, 2012.  Maisy and Anabel were the only National Gold Medal winners from Central Oregon's 49 Gold Key winners.  Congratulations!

February 26, 2012:  Summit Boys and Girls Nordic Teams Win at OHSNO State Championships 

The Summit High Nordic teams captured both the Boys and Girls titles at the Oregon High School Nordic State
Championships held at Mt. Hood Meadows!  Summit's Nick St. Clair, Ryan St. Clair and Max Millslagle swept the
top three positions in the boys classic race, while Emily Hyde won first in the girls race.   Congratulations!
 

The Bend High Boys and Girls Nordic teams came in second.  Way to go!



February 24, 2012:  Mountain View Boys and Girls Nordic Teams Win at OISRA State Championships

Congratulations to the Mountain View High School's boys and girls nordic teams as they repeated as combined team
champion on February 24 in the two-day Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association Nordic State Championships
held at Hoodoo.  The boys and girls teams won the individual team titles also.

Congratulations to the Summit High School Boys and Girls Swim Teams in winning the OSAA Class 5A State Championships at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham on Saturday, February 18.  The Boys team won their 7th swim championship in the last 10 years, while the Girls team won their 1st state championship.  Summit's Tommy Brewer set new 5A state records in winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races (shown on right in black/white photo).  Bend High's Doug Steinhauff placed 2nd in the 100 freestyle (shown on left in black/white photo). 

Mountain View's boys team placed 6th, while Bend High's boys team placed 8th.  The Bend High's Girls team placed 3rd.



February, 2012:  2011 Nike-Steve Prefontaine Prep Distance Runner of the YearSchoolCenter Picture

Congratulations to Summit High School senior Megan Fristoe, who was awarded the 2011 Nike-Steve Prefontaine Prep Distance Runner of the Year.  Megan was also named as finalist for the 2011 Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year.  The award winners were announced at the 2011 Oregon Sports Awards on February 12, 2012 in Beaverton.

Congratulations to Summit High School junior Travis Neuman, who was named the 2011-12 Gatorade Oregon Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.  The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, as well as high standards of academic achievement and
exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse.

January 14, 2012:  SchoolCenter PictureArt Students Receive Awards

Awards were presented to 79 art students from Sky View Middle School, Cascade Middle School, Pilot Butte Middle School, Bend High School, Mountain View High School and Summit High School on Saturday, January 14th at the fourth annual Central Oregon Scholastic Art Awards ceremony.  The ceremony and exhibit were held at the COCC Pinckney Gallery.

This year the Central Oregon Scholastic Art Awards honored 223 works from over 500 that were submitted for adjudication.  All 49 of our local Gold Key winners will be judged at the national level this spring, with the hopes of earning a national gold medal and an invitation to New York City to attend the National Scholastic Art Awards at Carnegie Hall.   See list of award winners >

December 5, 2011:  Mountain View High's Football Team Wins State ChampionshipsSchoolCenter Picture

Congratulations to the Mountain View High School Football Team in winning the OSAA Class 5A State Championships in Hillsboro on Saturday, December 3.  By defeating Sherwood 14-13, the Mountain View
football team became the first Bend team to win a state football championship in 71 years.  Way to go!

Mountain View's Jacob Hollister was named the State 5A Offensive Player of the Year and his teammate, Joel Skotte, was named State 5A Defensive Player of the Year.  Congratulations!



November 12, 2011:  Summit High's Volleyball Team Wins State ChampionshipsSummit High Girls Volleyball Team

Congratulations to the Summit High School Girls Volleyball Team in winning the OSAA Class 5A State Championships in Hillsboro on Saturday, November 12.  Summit came back from a 2-game deficit to beat West Albany in 5 games.

Summit's Gabby Crowell was named state 5A Volleyball Player of the Year.

November 6, 2011:  Summit High Girls and Boys Cross-Country Teams Win State TitleSchoolCenter Picture

SchoolCenter PictureSchoolCenter PictureCongratulations to the Summit High girls and boys cross-country teams in winning the individual and team Class 5A state cross-country titles at the championships held at Lane Community College in Eugene.  In winning their 4th consecutive title, Summit's Megan Fristoe, Ashley Maton, Piper McDonald and Sara Fristoe swept the top four spots for the girls team, which tied the all-time state record of 16 points.  Megan Fristoe (left photo) won her third consecutive individual state title and Travis Neuman (center photo) won his first state title. 

The Bend High girls cross-country team finished in second place at the state championship,
their best finish in the Class 5A division.
