Work While Your Kids Are In School!
Working for Nutrition Services in the school cafeterias is an excellent part-time job for the person seeking some extra income while their kids are in school. While we do have some full-time positions, they do not come open often. Most of our positions are less than four hours per day. The majority of our employees start with us as a substitute and are later hired into a permanent position. What kind of work is it? Preparing food, serving food to students and staff during meals, and cleaning up. You may also be trained on the computer program we use to track students' meal accounts. The work is fast-paced but extremely rewarding!
Nutrition Services provides training opportunities in customer service, safety and sanitation, and nutrition education through classes, workshops, conferences, and our local Central Oregon School Nutrition Association.
Work shirts, aprons and serving visors are provided. No experience necessary. Paid training is provided.
The current salary for substitutes is $9.53/hour and permanent part-time employees start at $10.46/hour. Why work for Nutrition Services? We are a team of motivated people who really enjoy working with kids! Work only the days your kids are in school -- no holidays or summers. Be part of the team working to achieve the goal of providing professional service and nutritious food to all our customers. What is required for employment? - A great attitude! One who is cheerful, hard-working, enjoys children, willing to learn, and is eager to make the difference. We're looking for employees with excellent customer service skills, have basic math skills, can communicate clearly. For substitutes, we look for those who are willing to travel to all sites within the school district; however, we do not expect Bend subs to travel to La Pine or vice versa. - Drug testing. We will arrange this after you're interviewed and offered a position. The fee is paid by the District. - Fingerprinting. This is arranged after you pass your drug test, and at or after the time you sign the final employment paperwork. The employee pays the fee, which is currently $62 and is deducted from your first paycheck. - Current Oregon Food Handler's Card. See below for more information.
How do I apply? All applications are done online on the Human Resources web site, including applying for specific positions. Human Resources no longer accepts paper applications. Job postings and position descriptions are also posted on the District's Human Resources web page. Click here for more information.
You are welcome to call the Nutrition Services office at 541-355-1150 and leave a message when you have completed an online application so we are aware of your interest.
We are always hiring substitute workers. When permanent openings are available, the positions are posted for a minimum of five working days on the Human Resources web site and bulletin board. Some, but not all, positions are advertised in the Bend Bulletin. You may contact Human Resources or Nutrition Services at any time to inquire about job openings. How do I get a Food Handler's Card? As of July 1, 1996 all restaurant employees and other commercial food establishment employees are required to obtain Food Handler Certification cards. This includes the school district Nutrition Services employees. Cards are issued after completion of a food handler test, which covers key critical control point procedures for preparing, handling, holding and storage of foods. The test consists of 32 questions and requires a passing score of 75%. Successful completion of the test earns a Food Handler Certification card that is accepted anywhere in the State of Oregon and is valid for 3 years. The fee for taking this test is $10.00. Keep a copy of the card in your wallet. If a permanent employee, post a copy at your work site. The test is offered via computer at any of the Deschutes County Community Development offices listed below. The computer test allows you to review questions that were missed and provides an explanation of that test question. No special computer knowledge is required to take this test. Pre-registration is not required, but pre-reading the Food Handler's Manual is strongly recommended. Online: Go to www.orfoodhandlers.com to study the manual and take the test online. You will need to pay the $10 fee by credit card and also have a printer to print your certification cards (it prints two cards on a page; please print an extra copy for our office files). Alternatively, you can PDF the certification cards and email them to your contact person in Nutrition Services.
