Work Based Learning

Structured work-based learning teaches young people how to perform in a business setting. Students begin by learning basic skills that nearly anyone can pick up quickly. These skills serve as building blocks for acquiring higher-level applied thinking expertise. Training over a period of years leads to advanced technical competence. Technical competence includes not only mastering procedures but also understanding fundamental principles and concepts while gaining an increasing capacity for analytical judgment. In addition to learning how to perform work tasks, youth learn how to learn. Students acquire a firm foundation of knowledge and skills, confidence in their own abilities, and an understanding that learning continues for life. Often, students are better prepared to make appropriate choices regarding colleges and fields of study as a result of structured work-based learning opportunities. This type of work experience is generally a paid position and students have the option to earn high school elective credit.
